Thanks, I did not realise that you could build/install these on an old 
kernel... that did not make any difference per se but updating the firmware did 
help (see below) :-)

Ha! :-) that seems to have done the trick. It's now properly being set-up as an 
AP. Haven't tried yet to go back to the original Connman version (0.69.4) but 
will try this soon.

The next issue is that the board is not acting as a gateway as I was expecting 
it to (it's connected over Ethernet). I can't ping www.connman.net for example 
from the machine connected to the AP (I've also tried using IP addresses only 
and not domain names).

Here is the output of netstat -r on the client side:
