Expanding the Tool Box: Making artists' materials reference collections
relevant to conservation practice

As conservators we are drawn to artifacts, whether for their beauty, their
spiritual or intellectual significance, or the tactile qualities they
display. Most conservators can also attest to their love of art-making
materials, and most of us have personally amassed or enjoyed collections of
beautiful papers, pigments, pastels, ink and paint. But beyond their
sensual appeal, how are they used to inform our practice, our understanding
of works of art made with them, and our treatment of these objects?

The Art on Paper Discussion Group (APDG) of the Book and Paper Group (BPG)
will host a session that focuses on these issues. We are seeking a number
of 15-minute presentations to be followed by a panel discussion and
question-and-answer session with the audience.

Possible topics for discussion may include:

   -

Building a study collection of artists' materials
   -

Making reference collections of artists' materials accessible
   -

Cataloguing and storage of artists' materials collections
   -

Using artists' materials expendably to make mock-ups that inform
   conservation treatments
   -

Scientific analysis of this type of material and how it informs art
   historical scholarship

We welcome a broad range of perspectives and encourage all who have an
interest in collecting, using and analyzing these materials as part of
their conservation practice to present their ideas. Please submit a brief
proposal or even some informal ideas by January 18, 2019 to the APDG
co-chairs. With thanks,

Harriet Stratis
