Kernel 2.4.4

I downloaded Kernel 2.4.4 from the cooker ftp. I am unable to use use 
the DVD-ROM drive on my G4 sawtooth with this kernel. Every time I try 
to mount a cd (or even use the eject command) the process locks up and 
control C won't even stop it. Has anyone else had this problem?
