Ok, I've stuffed my X server, and can't get it running again!!

When I installed 8.2 and booted into X, the login screen came up but was
not the usual clear window. It had a kind of criss-cross pattern over
it, although you could see the icon's and the two fields for entering
name and password. You couldn't see the drop down for the window
manager until you clicked on it though.

After logging in I went and ran the config program to change the
resolution to see if that's what was causing the problem... The screen
had been fine for a few days, and then last night I had to restart. The
first odd thing that happened was that the keyboard went nuts... for
example, if I hit the 'e' key, I got a 1 in the field, and hitting 'x'
would give an 'n'. Once I figured the keys out and got into kde, I went
in to the keyboard option in the control center and the Disable Keyboard
Layouts option box was selected. Unselecting it fixed the keyboard
problem. Wondering if it was something I did when I updated the X
configuration, I went back into it, reset all the options for my
powerbook (ATI Rage 128 I think it is), and restarted. I can no longer
get into X, and no matter how many times I run drakxconf or any of the
other config utilities I still get the same error... something to do
with V_BIOS.

Am I not using the right tool to re-configure X? I'm not sure what to
do now, I don't want to reinstall if I can help it... Has anyone any
ideas of what could be causing the problem?

Thanks

Nick
