Yes and no.  Some hardware requires it.  Anything that is needed at boot
time must be put in a ramdisk that is loaded at boottime.  So if the
driver for your disk controller card isn't included in the kernel you
must load it that way.  Or if you use filesytems like resiserfs, ext3,
XFS etc that are you not compiled in.  Basically it isn't necessarily
the model but what's built into the kernel you built and what you are
doing.
