What are exactly the steps you did ?
Isn't it a problem with the fonts themselves ? if you kill xfs and the
X server, are the new fonts seen after X comes back again ?
Can you add the fonts with an 'xset fp+ /your/path/to/them/' ?
What is the fonts.dir file like ?
