do, as root:

grep ower /etc/X11/XF86Config

if it shows:
[root@harper allen]# grep ower /etc/X11/XF86Config
    Option      "power_saver"
[root@harper allen]# 

(or something to that effect) then you need to edit /etc/X11/XF86Config (or 
XF86Config-4) and comment out the line with power_saver in it.
