No! Even for a single computer ntpd is the _*best*_ solution. It is very light, generate a very low traffic, gives always and accurate time and is able to do this with a laptop or a PC on line now and then. Ntpdate is useful only when you buy your PC or when you change the battery which is on the motherboard.
