You're both right! So there! I have the same problem. It is fixed by deleting ~/.gnome/session. So try just doing that, Quel.
But the session save/restore is apparently buggered. Any time I check "Save session" when shutting down Gnome, odds are there's not going to be a background next time I start it. I could just rm .gnome/session every time, but that kind of defeats the purpose of having a session save/restore, no?
