You're on the right track. The factory recalled the
unsold airplanes in stock and upgraded them. There are so many due to the
fact that sales were slow. It was an enhancement and a safety item,
nothing to do with bringing up the gross weight.
IMHO, if you've got a Forney, it is foolish to register it as
anything else but a Forney. If I was looking for a Forney and came across
one that was registered as an Ercoupe, I may walk wondering why the paperwork
was screwed up. This could be a hassle if you ever get ramped by someone
with a bit of knowledge (not likely). Yes, if GM bought Ford, the new
models may very well be called GM, just like when Studebaker bought
Packard.

Here is and other good point that
brings up another fact. See reply to my previous mail below.
Back in the fifties when
Forney was producing Aircoupes someone at the FAA OK the change of AW cert /
Registration to call 415’s as a Forney. When I first registered 3800H I had to
send in photo copies of this and that to have the FAA change back to ERCO. (If
Ford bought out GM would all chevy become Fords) NOT. How many of you have
Forney on your Registration? For 415’s that is. < I know some for you
Forney owner were jumping to reply>
Below is a fellow who
needs to help get the FAA up to date 35 years later. Why because the FAA could
say on a ramp check he is over gross. > If he is flying at 1400# wrecks
her and the investigator said he was over gross would the insurance
pay???<
By his reply I have though
of something I never did before. In 1947 ERCO came out with the new models the
CD and the D. Here he tells me that his factory books call it a D. with a date
of May of 47 (Conversion date). I could be wrong.L The factory was building more than it
was selling the end of 1946.
Would have they made the conversion to A/C sitting on the field? 3800H
ser# 4501 being the first made CD was produced in Apr. of 47. Maybe to deplete
inventory of C’s they would do it to witch ever the buyer wanted a CD or D.
Interesting concept. Or was it shipped back for the conversion?
Back to the beginning!
What was the intension of the conversion. More gross weight then it’s not a
CD!

last 35yrs.When I sent all copies of info to Faa they called and said better
leave as is as no one knew how to change.I love it
anyhow.N36--H __________________________________________________
