Hi Jeremy,
I flew back to Oshkosh from Oregon last summer, solo. I too am a low time pilot.
I'm sure you will get a lot of opinions, but here is mine for what it is worth.
You can't go wrong following roads over the mountains. They are the lowest routes through the passes, pass near the most towns and airports, and you always have an emergency place to land.
Good luck!

I'm a low-time pilot in a high time Alon, contemplating a trip from the San
Francisco Bay Area to Sun Valley Idaho, in the summer. Anyone with advice
about routing?
Is simply following I-80 the most practical way, rather than cutting across
vast areas of desert with nothing in sight, including roads? How about
crossing the Sierra in the summer? I hope this isn't too rudimentary for the
list.
