Mary is correct, follow the roads, When you are high and near the edges
of your performance envelope, it is no time for experimentation.

I have made several Rocky mountain crossings in our Coupe and we always
do it early, and on cold mornings. you must utilize every advantage you
have. Don't start over until you can see where you are headed.
Prepare for turbulence on the Eastern or downwind side due to the
rolling or wrap up of the prevailing wind. Always stay on the downwind
side of canyons to enable you to turn around by turning into the wind.
Sparky Imesons book on mountain flying is a must. Have a good qualified
instructor with you the first time.

I have a Summer home in Bridgeport CA, (elevation 7,000') which
requires crossing the Sierra this has allowed me to accumulate many
experiences in this field. one last thought. DONT GET OVERCONFIDENT,
there are many gremlins hidden in those hills!
