       I may have been the one that recomended gear oil in the main
struts. I found that it gave a more gradual compression of the strut 
on
landing. With hydraulic oil, with the plane jacked up so that the 
wheel
hung free , I could easily swing the wheel up quickly by hand with
little damping action. With gear oil it was much slower. There's not a
lot of action in the strut as it only moves down once on takeoff and 
up
once on landing. This is only my opinion, not gospel.
