As I remember, there is no other rubber seal other than the
O-ring, which fits in the groove near the bottom of the piston. This can
be purchased at any auto store for less than a buck. For good damping
action on the main gear, gear oil is far superior to hydraulic oil. I
don't see how you could ever compress the donuts enough to get an extra
3/8" washer in there and still get it back together again. If you did
get it together the suspension would be as hard as a rock. I drilled 8
-1/4" holes around the outside circumfrance through to the center. A
3/8" drill leaves a 1/4" hole. This gives somewhere for the rubber to
flex, but still enough strength to hold the plane at full height at
rest. I made a donut compressor for about a buck. Two pieces of 2x4 .
One has a hole, in the center of the flat side of the board, cut with a
hole saw, to fit over the top housing of the strut. Next clamp the two
boards together and drill 7/16" holes either side of the first larger
hole about 6" apart. Use two pieces of threaded ready-rod with washers
and nuts with enough length to reach through the boards plus the length
of the strut plus a few inches extra. Four nails or screws on the bottom
board will hold the strut from moving around while compressing. Stand
the bottom of the strut between the screws or nails, drop the second
2X4,with the hole, over the top housing of the assembled strut. Insert
the rods through the small holes, install flat washers and nuts and
tighten down until the snap ring cab be snapped into place. Make sure
the snap ring is properly seated. Undo clamping nuts on the rods and
Bob's your uncle. It takes longer to discribe it than to do it! While
your at this stage, check for side play at the knee joint. If the two
fiber washers are worn you can have up to 3/4" sideways movement. New
washers eliminate most of this and make ground handling much more
positive. Hope this helps somewhat.
