I live on an airpark in Columbus, NM. Monday morning, 6 of us in 3 planes
flew about 120 mi north to Glenwood to visit a guy up there with a Cessna
337 SkyMaster who was providing breakfast. After an enjoyable day of
eating and sightseeing, we left about 4:30 in the afternoon to head home,
about a 1 hr. flight.

I was in the lead with about 10 min. between each of us. As I approached
Deming, NM. all I could see to the south was a wall of dust approaching
the town, about 5 miles south of the airport. I got in and landed without
incident. Steve, next behind me made it to the runway with the storm only
a mile away and the wind at about 20 kt. I took the picture a couple
minutes before he landed. We watched the dust come at us as it obscured
the hangars and water tower on the far side of the field, then the
runways. Wind was as high as 37 kt. gusting to 42 kt.

This storm had gone through Columbus about an hour before and had enough
rain in it then to mix with the dust and rain mud! Everyone is washing
their cars and windows this week. The third plane in our group had to
turn around and ended going up to an airpark at Membres where we have
friends and stayed the night. They made it home about 8:30 am the next
morning. As they say, "If you have time to spare, go by air!".

The picture is of the leading edge of the dust cloud. There appears to be
a group of dust devils in the lead sucking up the dirt. Someone else
airborne at the time said the air was clear above the cloud at about 3000
ft. AGL. This is only the 3 one of these I have seen in the 3 years I
have lived here and by far the clearest view of what makes it tick.

The picture was taken with a Sony Mavica FD-88 on 1024x768 with std.
compression.
