I loved them as a kid. Lived at the south end of the SF Bay area, where
the wind blew hard every afternoon. The box kites were very stable in
such conditions and flew nearly straight overhead, as opposed to
having a big horizontal run of string. I had best result with the basic
12-16" box made of nothing but paper, string, tape and boxwood.

Keep in mind, this was the era of the 'bat' kite, and box kites were
exceedingly rare at the time.
