Larry,
Is it possible you were in mountain wave and not thermals? I live in
thermal country, even have them in the winter, and they tend to be
somewhat
intermittant and pretty bumpy with the tendency to rotate you off course.

Mountain wave is less rough and doesn't have near the tendency to rotate
the
aircraft. I have often paralleled a mountain range at a distance of about
5
miles on the lee side taking advantage of the up wave. Flying my Cardinal
once toward Denver I was on the range east of Albuquerque headed north and
since it has a constant speed prop, I was able to maintain an open
throttle
and with the nose down to maintain altitude was holding the airspeed just
below the red line for 20 minutes (which at over 200 mph ground speed was
a
bunch of miles).

The multiple thermal condition is the one situation where I have found the
pedal-less coupe lacking because of the inability to maintain the nose on
the course line and thus requiring a banking turn back to course each
time.
This could be up to several times a minute, in other terms, almost
continuously. Rudder pedals solve this problem and make the trip much
easier. I suspect Fred never flew his creation over the desert through
nearly continuous thermal/dust devil/whirlwind (all the same thing)
conditions.
