In the case of a 172, you have enough 'head' that the sensing unit both has enough pressure to work properly AND doesn't impede the flow. But in cases where the fuel flows only a foot or so downhill, things may go awry. I also recall that someone on the list has a fuel computer in their plane, but don't recall who.
