Hi Dennis,
The fuel drains are screwed into a fitting with a flange that is
riveted into the inside of the
fuel tank. The fuel drain itself has a pipe thread, and can easily be
removed, but that doesn't seem
to be your problem. If the fuel is weeping from a missing rivet head, the
correct way to fix it is to
remove the tank, drill out the remaining rivets, remove the fitting from
the inside of the tank,
inspect it for corrosion, inspect the tank inner skin for corrosion, and,
if all is well, coat the
bottom of the flange of the fitting with PRC or other suitable tank
sealant, align it with the existing
holes, and re-rivet it in place. Sounds easy enough so far, but actually,
in order to do all of this
you will probably have to drill out all of the tank rivets so you can get
inside the tank to do the
job. No fun, especially the part about replacing the tank rivets. (This
should only be done under the
supervision of an A & P, of course.)
Good luck,
Syd (also grounded like the rest of you)
