Now if we can just get 1 Ray Charles (and .5 Jimi Hendrix) for every
Kate Smith, life will be so much better :-)
Actually Crosby, Stills, and Nash did a nifty 'America' on Leno last
night. Where the other guest was John 'user fees' McCain. Talk about
strange bedfellows. All did a very good job. CSN especially. Geez, they
sound good.
Now, me being a child of the 60s, I remember when 'God Bless America'
was a weapon of the folks who were on the other side of the Viet-Nam
question. It still sort of bothers me. It's a fine song. It's just I have
certain
bad associations with it. Curls my toes.
Sort of the way 'Taps' played in the US cemetery at Omaha Beach at makes
me choke up no matter how much I tell myself that I'm not gonna.
On the other hand, I always sort of preferred 'This Land Is Your Land'
for patriotic music.
Particularly one of the Woody's verses that never gets sung:
As I was walking
I saw a sign there
And on the one side
It said 'No Trespassing'
But on the other side
It didn't say nuthin
THAT SIDE WAS MADE FOR YOU AND ME!
