The wings of a coupe are easily removed. My girlfriend and I removed ours
in about 45 minutes. Of course you will have to have an IA inspect it
after you reassemble them and sign it off before flying again but the
process is really quite easy. All you do is remove the screws holding the
panels in place. There are about 500 of them... ok not that many but it
feels like there are on a hot tarmac. Then you will be able to see the
large wing spar bolts, the rear wing attachment bolt, linkages to the
aeriolons and electrical connection wires and pitot tube hose. Disconnect
the wires and hose, pull the cotter pins out of the bolts, remove the
bolts and then the wing. Make sure all the hardware is kept together. A
good socket and wrench set, screwdriver and a long prybar handle for the
large sockets and normal box end wrenches were all that I needed. The
long prybar is the most important as a normal socket wrench won't fit
because the head is too big. One bolt can be held with a socket,
universal and socket wrench extension, but you need the prybar on the
other bolt to get enough torque to bust them loose. There isn't much room
to work and you can only move them a little at a time. You will need a
15/16" socket and a 1" socket for the large bolts. What I did was get a
towing company with a large flatbed truck. The wheels are 8' from wheel
to wheel and most flatbeds are about 7 ½ feet across. So, you will have
to guide the tires on the edge surrounding the flatbed. I lowered the air
in the tires to get them to straddle the edges. It worked great and the
towing company was thrilled to death to have bragging rights for towing a
plane! We strapped it down around the gear struts and kept our speed
below take off speed! I wrapped the wings in lots of blankets and we
secured them to the bed under the plane. Of course the pain in the butt
is towing charges and the cost of having an IA sign off your plane again,
but it beats leaving it out on a ramp somewhere.
