Good news and bad news. First the good. Yesterday I received a letter from my Congressman, Paul Ryan (R-WI), in response to my e-mail to him about section 1062 of the Aviation Security bill. Which is now in conference. Based on what was written I think Mr. Ryan actually read my e-mail. His response indicated that he agreed with my position and had spoken to others in Congress (from both sides of the isle) who also agreed. While the intent of 1062 was to keep functioning hand-grenades, mortars, missiles, tanks and other lethal weapons out of the hands of ordinary citizens (which is good), the section was too broadly written and could be "mis-interpreted" by some bureaucrat years down the road. Which could make surplus military aircraft in the hands of pivate pilots illegal. So, he said, it certainly needs to be addressed. Now the bad news. Rep. Ryan is not part of the conference committee, so I don't know how much influence he can have in this regard. The other bad news is that, while I also wrote both my senators, Herb Kohl (who introduced section 1062) and Russ Feingold, I haven't heard back from either. (Not that I expected to. I know they are busy.) It was reported by the media that Sen. Kohl, when asked about it, said he wasn't concerned. And the way the report was worded it sounded like it would not bother him if it passed in conference as written. (As it did in the Senate.) The news is reporting that negotiations are not going well. It seems to be mostly, if not entirely, over the federalizing of airport security. As important as that issue is, I hope it does not 'hog' so much attention that the other areas of concern are not properly addressed. Let's keep the heat on folks.
