I have always used a dead cut to check for live mags on aircraft I fly. In
fact I was taught that procedure when I learnt in the sixties and would
get
a cuff behind the ear if I missed it.

If done correctly at 1000 rpm it will not load the muffler with fuel. It
should be both off for a split second. long enough to hear the ignition
cut.

It will definitely save you neck one day.
