I just read more on the proposal to let us maintain our own airplanes (as one can now do in Canada) in Atlantic Flyer.
Apparently some A&P groups are arraying themselves against the proposal. Guess that's no surprise, though all the AIs I know have more than enough work. I think this is something that we really need to get behind. In getting ready for my annual, and reading the ADs, I can see that these are mostly things that my red-blooded-American-boy mechanical abilities pretty much cover. And in thinking about it, I consider that I've been deferring things that I could easily do to improve the airplane because it isn't legal for me to do them. At the same time, I realize a lot of guys are doing things illegally. If there were an owner-maintained category, there could and would actually arise a system of training and mentoring much like the EAA has for homebuilts now. I'm pretty convinced that it would contribute to safety. Imagine that! Doing your own annual inspection! Legally! No more anal-retentive process on the 337s, either. Part of the proposal is that you can make reasonable, safe modifications and sign them off yourself. Since the owner/operator is always primarily responsible for condition of the aircraft, not much would change anyway, except maybe that you'd have to get an indemnity signed when you sold it. I'd suggest that we all write to Phil Boyer and let him know that we want the AOPA to get squarely behind this idea. Yeah, there are some down sides, but I think that the up sides far outweigh them.
