I don't know who invented it, but when I learned to fly, it was the
primary nav aid other than an ADF. The Champs I were flying
had a battery operated 200-400 KC receiver that was used
to pick up the radio range.

When I got to fly an IFR airplane that had an ADF I was able to listen
to the radio and fly to music. What a luxury! I remember as a 16 year old
flying over the San Fernando Valley in California, listening to "Paddling
Madeline Home". When I got active again I mentioned something about the
"cone
of silence" to my instructor. The young whipper snapper didn't know
what I was talking about. <G>
