Skipper, I think that using a smaller wheel would have to have an STC or Field Approval, as it was not on the Equipment list for Ercoupes.
But further, Fred Weick's comments are interesting. In evaluating the tricycle gear, he found that the nose wheel has more load than either of the main gear wheels ....so, I would guess the use of a smaller wheel would not be allowed...--But , who knows.
