Good question, but I'm unsure of the answer. I think the instrument needs to be TSOed. You do not need a supplemental type certificate (STC) for your own installation provided you can get the FAA guy to sign off on it. You submit the request on a form 337 for one-time approval. Sometimes it helps if you can cite an existing plane using the installation you are proposing. If anyone wants to install the single probe K&S gauge, I'll send you a copy of my 337 for a reference.
