As a practicing A/P and IA I would recommend you hire a different mechanic

than the one who usually maintains any prospective airplane.  Preferably
find 
a local (your airport) trusted mechanic and fly him into look at any that 
sound good.   we just hate to see weekly someone buy a "real piece of 
crappoloa" freshly annualed that has all kinds of problems if the owner
had 
just asked us.  He will probably want you to get the last few annuals and 
pages of each log book in advance to see what type of maintenance it's 
getting.  We just hate to see just a stamp for 40 years with no entries
other 
than the once a year oil-change some people settle for./tom
