He's probably right, but I wouldn't do it.  The reason is that most
people, without training, will get halfway through the roll and
end up coming out in a split-s because they:

1. Didn't get the nose high enough at the start, and so they
   end up upside down with the nose pointed about 45 degrees down;

2. Didn't get up enough airspeed before the entry; and

3. Lose their nerve halfway through the roll and forget to keep in 
  full aileron;

4.  Forget to use the elevator at proper times in the roll to 
  help with the pitch;

5.  Forget to use the rudder.  If they have one...heh

I wouldn't do it in an Ercoupe because too often it ends up in a crash.
Also, never do it without training, because you're almost certain to 
end up in a split-s.

If you don't know what a split-s is, it's when you roll upside down, then 
stop rolling and pull back to do a "half loop".   It usually gets 
way above redline speed.
