Gascolator position

Hi I just bought an ercoupe and the Gascolator  was mounted on the firewall not the Carb(engine location)!   My IA says the it must be moved to the Carb position. Does anyone out there know about such a mod as the plane passed annual last year with this mod without problem ( by the last owner).   I would like to know as it is pretty simple to check the fuel up there on the fire wall.     Regards Brian 93462
