HI John, Alternatives to the method you are using could be to have a menu fixed to the browser. I am using one for my blog site: http://www. 3pointdesign.com/three/collage/collage.html - scroll down to see fix.
Nw my first ever site has a fixed left menu, however I have since learnt that because of screen res and browsers (IE!!!) this is a complicated process unless it is quite small: http://www.neilparishmep.org.uk/ - again scroll to see effect. I have also used fixed / absolute positioning for items in the header. minimise browser to see left and right effect. Dunno if that is any help, but alternative. What I have seen with some other sites is a menu fixed to the bottom of the page - this looked nice. They even had pop up boxes so that it worked like a drop down menu - just not on rollover.
