Well, I've fixed my problem for the most part. I simply used the trick where absolutely positioned elements have more than one vertical property set (which doesn't work in IE, but we're operating on a Firefox/Safari only assumption).
So we've set the top to 2em, the bottom to 0, the left to 0 and left the right as auto, with the width defined as 200px, and now I get all the niceties of the design. It's a hack, but it works exactly to spec.
