There is no gap (white space) on the entire right side of the center
panel with font-scaling in Mac OS 10.4.11 in Firefox/3.0.4.
There is a gap (white space) on the entire right side of the center
panel with font-scaling in XP Firefox/3.0.3.

The below deals only with the gap you are getting with IE/7 and page
zoom, and nothing at all to do with what yo are seeing in XP Firefox/3.0.3.

I am suggesting that you use html comments to "comment out the menu" so
that it is not seen by the browser, like so:
<!--
<div class="linksprincipais" id="navigation"><ul><li><a href="#"
title="Home">Home</a></li><li><a href="#" title="CSS
Library">CSS</a></li><li><a href="#" title="New">New</a></li><li
id="current"><a href="#" title="Revised">Revised</a></li><li><a href="#"
title="Tools">Tools</a></li>  <li><a href="#" title="DHTML
Forums">Forums</a></li></ul></div>
-->
The large gap /may/ go away when you view the page with page zoom in
IE/7.0 if the menu is not seen by the browser. Note that I have not
tried this, and that this is an untested assumption.

You and your would be Web designer can attempt to control the Web from
now until forever and then some. In the end she'll win. Hands down.
