-Caveat Lector-
I was just thinking about my reply, and I understand why I didn't seem
clear. I usually discuss these types of things with other veterans (most
other people don't seem interested), so I tend to assume that the person I'm
speaking with has a similar background and experiences. Sorry about that,
I'll try to explain more fully...
The military is almost always chronically short of doctors. Most ordinary
sailors don't usually see one at sick call, they see a nurse or other health
care provider (such as an enlisted medic, who has been qualified to treat
people without a doctor's supervision). This is very often true in the
submarine community, since many doctors don't want to sink in a metal can for
six months at a time (i.e., deploy with the submarine). So in answer to your
query, no there aren't any people in the military who want that job.
Typically, these assignments are offered to Navy doctors first, and if they
aren't filled, the Navy goes to the medical community looking for volunteers.
That's why I said this seems to be an act of desperation on the Navy's part;
they have a job they have to fill, with no takers.
The Navy's just trying to get someone to fill the billet, with an offer of
special training as an incentive. Unfortunately, I predict this won't work,
for the pay reasons I outlined earlier in another post.
