-Caveat Lector- Actually, I've been around hospitals my whole life. I know of their strengths and weaknesses. But as you say, that really is not the issue - it is the value of life, yes, and also if your life is your own or not.
Is all life equally valuable? You say human life, because I assume you don't mind the killing of rats, mosquito's and disease causing bacteria. So the first arbitrary line between life that is valuable and life that is not has been drawn. I also assume you don't mind the killing of cows and chickens, et. al., for food and clothing and whatever. So we move up the chain, and draw the line higher. So if my assumptions are correct it is OK to kill life as long as it serves humans. Let's see if you are willing to draw the line higher... How do you feel about the killing of convicted murderer's, child rapists, etc? How about the killing of the "enemy?" You know - like if someone builds bombs for suicide bombers to use in Jerusalem or Tel Aviv?, Or if soldiers from across a border show up with guns and start killing innocents, you and your family, etc. I suspect you are not against the killing of such people. So the arbitrary line of which life is valuable has shot up further, even beyond the line imposed by being a member of our species. E.G. You may feel that the life of a leading member of Hamas who is dedicated to killing others has less value than , say, that of a rabbi who teaches children. So - again these are assumptions on my part - you do not feel that ALL human life is equally valued, and to be protected from death. So then it becomes a matter of opinion, and political stance, who's life is so valuable, and who's is not. So - to me - I draw that arbitrary line where it allows non-viable fetuses to be killed, as less valuable than the mothers who bear them. It allows those who are sick and in pain to end their lives if they wish. Why do I draw the line where I do? Because to me my belief in freedom for the individual includes the concept that we own our own bodies. That the State does not have the right to restrict what I do with my own body, which includes what foods or chemicals I ingest, who I have sex with (and whether or not I charge the for it), whether or not I bring a fetus to term, and the right to die at a time of my own choosing. But - that's just me - you mileage my vary. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace.
