# Brothel lands in Feds' hands. RENO, Nev. (AP) - In less than a month, the
girls of the Mustang Ranch will be gone and the tacky carpets, overstuffed
sofas and flocked wallpaper will belong to the gov't. And the gov't will
be shutting it down. Perhaps forever. A federal jury ordered the brothel's
owners to turn it over to the gov't, along with other properties owned by
two companies convicted of being set up to hide the identity of the true
owner, fugitive brothel baron Joe Conforte. The issue of prostitution
never faced the jury, as it is legal in a dozen of Nevada's 17 counties,
including the one where the Mustang is sited outside Reno. The defendants

of the bass-heavy music. By the afternoon, a mass of young people packed
the 3.8-mile boulevard that runs through central Tiergarten Park. Crowds

# Taiwanese sex slaves to sue Japan. TAIPEI (AP) Lawyers for Taiwanese women
forced to serve as sex slaves to Japanese soldiers during World War II are
going to sue for compensation and an apology in Tokyo. The group will file
a complaint before the Tokyo District Court from nine women demanding an
apology and $82,000 each for their suffering. Five of the plaintiffs will
travel with the lawyers to Tokyo. The case gained new attention last week
with the revelation that several prominent Taiwanese families were share-
holders in a Japanese company that ran the wartime brothels. Taiwan was a
Japanese colony from 1895 to 1945 and served as a base for the Imperial
army's wartime thrust into Southeast Asia. See
