-Caveat Lector-

This was an extremely interesting post that addresses one of the genuine
mysteries of European folklore and place-lore: namely, the wide distribution
of names such as Dan, Don, Danu, Diana, Tana, Danaan, Danaus,
Danuvius/Danube, and the like. Indo-European linguists derive such river
names as "Don" (Ukraine) and "Danube" (Central/Eastern Europe) from a
Pro-Indo-European (PIE) root *dôn, "?flowing water". Clearly, however, the
Don-names were more widely spread than the Indo-European zone, as this post
points out. The parallel occurence of Bel/Baal/Belenos/Belili, etc.,
suggests the existence of a cult of (tentatively) "Tana" and "Bel",
worshipped across a wide geographic range from Mesopotamia to Ireland and
the Baltic coast, probably no later than the sixth or seventh millennium
B.C.E.

Also, in Irish mythology, the "Sons of Mil" or Milesians were supposed to
have come to Eire from Spain; and they had earlier come to Spain from Asia
Minor via North Africa. Some authorities identified them with a party of
Trojans who left Troy at the same time as Aeneas but in a different
direction. This might be considered typical Celtic hyperbole, except for the
speculative connection 'Mil'=Latin 'miles', "soldier"; thus it becomes
possible to suggest that the "Sons of Mil" perhaps included Roman
auxiliaries or treaty troops, originally from Asia Minor (Galatia?). (See
Alwyn and Brinley Rees, *Celtic Heritage*, for informed speculation on this
and related matters.)

One minor point, however: Old Irish 'dun' means "stockaded village" or
"fort", as in Dun Laoghaire, "Dunleary". It *is not* cognate to anything in
Hebrew.
