Tracing such god-names back to the tribe of "Dan" (="judge" in Hebrew) among
the Israelites falls short of something more radical -- that same word in
Hebrew originated in SUMERIAN (see the basic Sumerian lexicon at
http://www.sumerian.org/sumerlex.htm)
and the sea-faring "Danites" of Israel were apparently a later "add-on" to
the Tribes -- an adopted group of Phoenicians, if not indeed some
late-surviving SUMERIAN colony.
Otherwise, apart from the Proto-Indo-European root meaning "flowing water,"
there's that old IE word for "shining" and "sky" (a god-word) that becomes in
Latin Deus (alternately --the "u" becoming hard "v" in some dialects-- Divus,
souirce of the woird "divine") and Jove (the "d" mutating from "dy" [Dyaus in
Sanskit) to "dj" and then to a "j" sound], as well as Diana and Jana/Janus
("n" popping up) and Greek Potei-don (Poseidon). Not to mention the old
Greek "de" (variant of "ge") as in De-meter ("mother EARTH") that may relate
such words to an IE root meaning LAND (territory) rather than "flowing water"
...
