It would seem that we are at an impass. Regardless of the label, one
mindset believes that man, left to his own devices, would act in a
selfish, greedy, and erratic way. The other mindset believes that man,
left to his own devices, would act in a cooperative way with those around
him.
I would have to say that history, particularly before Gettenburg, shows
that man is generally self regulating. The view that man, not knowing
the christian god, is not capable of organized society, fairness and
freedom, or self control. The facts do not support this. Vast areas of
the world did not know the christian god, but managed to attain high
levels of sophistication in both technology and culture. The often
overlooked falacy in Western Civilization teaching is that "Different
does not mean Lower". What the christian european conqurers found in the
Americas did not match their concept of "right", so it was "wrong". Take
a look as the Iriquios League, the Cherokee Culture, the Southwestern
Cultures, The Northwest Coast Cultures to name a few. These were highly
organized mutually cooperative cultures that functioned without the
'benefit' of a single belief system. I am purposly omitting the more
aggressive cultures that also flourished, even tho none of these came
close to matching the agressiveness of their christian european
conqurers.
I maintain that 99.8% of man can get along just fine without any formal
religion or governance. They are also quite able to handle the 0.2% who
do not have the requisite skills to get along. Over 100,000 years of the
history of man shows this to be true. This history also shows that the
few instances of mass violence have been the result of a strong religion
or a strong central governance taking control.
