-Caveat Lector- One has to wonder if the unusual activity of sharks has anything to do with the tests of the new underwater communications system based on low frequency acoustic waves. --SW) Tuesday September 4 1:34 AM ET Planes to Patrol N.C. Beach After Shark Death NAGS HEAD, N.C. (Reuters) - Officials will begin aerial patrols over North Carolina's Outer Banks shortly after daybreak on Tuesday checking for sharks a day after a swimmer was killed and his companion critically injured in the second fatal shark attack of the U.S. Labor Day holiday weekend. The couple was attacked on Monday as they swam in waist-deep water covering a sandbar about 20-40 feet off the beach near Avon, a remote town along North Carolina's Outer Banks barrier islands, Dare County emergency spokeswoman Dorothy Toolan said. ``It appears that it was a shark attack. It's difficult to confirm because no one that we talked to actually saw the shark,'' she said. ``We're going to start flyovers around 7 in the morning, and those will last throughout the day, just looking for any unusual (shark) migrations.'' The beaches along the Outer Banks, a popular vacation destination featuring miles of dune-covered beaches and national parklands, remained open after the attack, the first reported here this summer. The victim, who was 27 years old, was pronounced dead on arrival at a medical center on Hatteras Island. His 22-year-old companion was taken by helicopter to Sentara Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, where she was in critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery for wounds suffered in the attack, a hospital emergency room physician told reporters. The incident was the second fatal shark attack along the U.S. Eastern seaboard over the Labor Day holiday weekend, the unofficial end of the summer vacation season. On Sunday, 10-year-old David Peltier, who had been surfing with his father and brothers at Sandbridge Beach in Virginia, about 140 miles north of the Outer Banks, died after a shark tore a 17-inch gash in his left thigh, severing an artery. That attack occurred on Saturday in about 4 feet of water some 50 feet from shore. Witnesses said the boy's father wrestled with the shark, finally freeing his son from its grip after repeatedly punching it on the head. ``IT'S A HEADLINE...'' Although the number of shark attacks and fatalities has been down this year compared to past years, the attacks have drawn widespread media coverage this summer following the dramatic rescue of an 8-year-old boy in Florida in July. Jessie Arbogast, who remains in guarded condition, survived after a shark tore off his arm as he swam off Pensacola, Florida. The boy nearly bled to death, but received life-saving first aid from the minute he was pulled from the water, and his severed arm was reattached in surgery. Weeks later, Wall Street investor Krishna Thompson was bitten while on holiday in the Bahamas, and had his mauled leg amputated. Heading into the Labor Day weekend, the International Shark Attack File at the University of Florida had recorded only one death from a shark attack, in Brazil, compared to an average of eight per year in recent years. Worldwide, 48 attacks had been recorded, with 37 of those reported in the United States and 28 of those in Florida. That compares to 84 recorded worldwide last year, including 53 in the United States and 37 of those in Florida. But the spate of highly publicized attacks has left beachgoers nervous, and sparked a frenzy of sorts among media outlets covering the story. ``It's a headline, it's the big story today,'' Toolan said as she worked into the night returning calls from reporters seeking details on the latest attack.
