Fujimori operations 'killed hundreds'

BY GABRIELLA GAMINI, SOUTH AMERICA CORRESPONDENT

A PARLIAMENTARY commission in Peru is investigating reports that hundreds of
poor indigenous women died after 300,000 were forcibly sterilised in a scheme
backed by the disgraced former president Alberto Fujimori.

Julio Velarde, the head of the commission, said the investigation was started
after more than 100,000 women turned to the authorities with accounts of how
they were made to have the operations by health workers sent to remote Andes
villages in the 1990s.

The inquiry, one of many into Señor Fujimori’s alleged misdeeds, will also
study allegations that several women were left mutilated and suffering side
effects after the unhygenic operations.

The women’s accounts came to light after Señor Fujimori, who has fled to
Japan to escape from unrelated corruption and murder charges, was forced out
of office in November last year.
