-Caveat Lector- Saul/Paul was the one who moved the "Christians" away from Jewish practice. The early Church fathers followed suit. It was really a personality clash between 2 factions: that of James the brother of Jesus, and the Paulists, who also included Peter. Obviously, the Peter/Paul faction won both the day and the right to pass their version of history down to us.
One more thing: None of the three major religions we're talking about here REALLY encourages the in-depth, word for word study of their sacred texts. Yes, each one does have a few "scholars" but they are a distinct minority, hence the world REALLY in caps. All 3 encourage the vast majority of their believers to take the word of the "experts", be they rabbis, sages, priests, imans, prophets, ministers, whatever they call their most reverend leaders. Believers are not expected to think for themselves; in fact, in Christianity, Jesus is referred to as "The Good Shepherd" and he calls his followers "My sheep."
