I finally have installed the basic debian linux system.
What version of Debian did you start with?
I've installed the KDE metapackage and now I'm trying to configure my X-windows.
How did you do that? Did you use apt-get or some other method?
I've looked at several webpages and I still don't understand. Does installation of the KDE metapackage include installation of a X server?
What have you tried so far?
In theory, everything should already be installed if apt-get did indeed install all the dependencies for KDE. You should now be able to change the runlevels to the one for X, which will start kdm. With some distros X starts in runlevel 5 (e.g. init 5), but I believe Debian uses runlevel 3. Check /etc/inittab to be sure.
Do I need to create a .xinitrc file? Any help
or advice would be appreciated. Aren't there setup program to help with the
configuration?
Should be automagic. If not, try 'startkde'. It should bring up KDE.
