Got the CD from a friend. Debian Installer RC 2 (i386).

the command: apt-get install kde

1. installed the base system. Had problem booting into the system because
of a hardware clock hang. Figured out that I had to add --directisa option
to hwclock command in hwclock.sh, hwclockfirst.sh, and tzsetup files.

2. installed kde 'apt-get install kde' ctr-alt-del to restart in X-windows.
didn't work. Thought maybe X server wasn't installed with kde so:
apt-get install x-window-system. ctr-alt-del and it looks like x display
manager tries to start but fails. In fact, the window blinks 3 times.

Specifically, how do I find this out. I looked in this file and didn't see
anything obvious

when I try startkde, I get:

xsetroot: unable to open display ''
xset: unable to open display ""
xsetroot: unable to opend display ''
startkde: Starting up....
startkde: Running kpersonalizer
kwin: cannot connect to X server
kpersonalizer: cannot connect to X server
