Has anyone else played with Ubuntu?

I just installed Xandros 3.0 OCE which was OK on my eMachine machine. What I don't care for is that software packages have to be "Xandros-ized", otherwise things break. As an alternative to Xandros, I thought I would try out Ubuntu. So, I blew Xandros away and installed Ubuntu.

Two words: very nice. I've only had a chance to play with it for about 30 minutes last night. Some key features:
- installed very quickly and easily. Looks like RH's Anaconda is behind it.
- Debian-based. apt-get and all that wonderful stuff.
- desktop is Gnome
- desktop is extremely simplified - crisp and clean
- menu is clean: the apps I want, not 50 million.
- root account is disabled, kind of like Mac OS X -- used sudo
- adjusting screen resolution was a snap

Things that could be better (IMHO):
- more minimalist install. For example, only install a browser (FireFox) and Synaptic. Don't install OOo, but offer it and all the other apps as "after-install" customizations.
- offer cumulative updates via BitTorrent.
- I have two mouse pointers, with the "X" pointer stuck on the desktop while the "arrow" pointer moves

Things I haven't tried (lots, but here's a few):
- install/remove new software via Synaptic
- add/remove users
- playing CDs, MP3s, or DVDs
- installing CrossOver Office. Anyone tried this? Anyone know if this works on Ubuntu?
- LAMP
- Java development (for AP courses)
