I've recently switched to Ubuntu (Hoary) on my notebook and I love it.

Overall I think it is the best desktop distribution available.  It's not
perfect (as you point out), and in fact I'm recommending that a lot of
my friends try out the Live CD and wait until Hoary is officially
released in April before installing, but it is definitely a distribution
motivated by all the right things: usability, hardware compatibility,
free software.

Agreed.  And I believe they are working on this as well as a new
graphical installer:

I haven't had any problems with any of these tasks.  You'll want to
enable the multiverse/universe in your /etc/apt/sources.list so you have
access to the full range of software available.

Haven't tried this yet.  I'd be interested to hear your experience if
you get around to doing the install.
