I've recently switched to Ubuntu (Hoary) on my notebook and I love it. I wrote a bit about my reasons for switching here: http://pubcrawler.org/2005/01/28/writing-as-a-user-for-a-moment/ Overall I think it is the best desktop distribution available. It's not perfect (as you point out), and in fact I'm recommending that a lot of my friends try out the Live CD and wait until Hoary is officially released in April before installing, but it is definitely a distribution motivated by all the right things: usability, hardware compatibility, free software. >Things that could be better (IMHO): > - more minimalist install. For example, only install a browser >(FireFox) and Synaptic. Don't install OOo, but offer it and all the >other apps as "after-install" customizations. Agreed. And I believe they are working on this as well as a new graphical installer: http://www.ubuntulinux.org/wiki/GraphicalInstaller > - install/remove new software via Synaptic > - add/remove users > - playing CDs, MP3s, or DVDs I haven't had any problems with any of these tasks.
