We actually played the 5th Edition WiF, but the issues are the same.
At first we went with A LOT of mailings, especially for things like
air combat rounds, etc. We also did some chat sessions in tandem with
doing the rounds of combat.

We would also use some pre-defined orders based on results of combat.
This does not give you as much flexibility, but it made for a lot
less die rolls (it also might be more historic). Other "obvious"
moves were assumed, like preforming HQ support on defense, air
interceptions, etc. Some of these we had to redo if there were wrong
assumptions, but this was fairly uncommon.

My opponent and myself have a 5 hour time-zone differential, so our
choice is pretty much PbEM of nothing, so we have found ways to adapt.
Plus with PbEM, we can go as slow as required.
