how many bikes do you want to outfit?

when i started i was just as overwhelmed as you sound.
others advice helped but everyone had chosen their own route
----that is what you will need to do

my research led me to
http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/TopCategory_10052_10551_400009_-1_400009_Y
i started on a hybrid so my original pedal type was the shimano "spd" style
clipin
i found them to be fairly inexpensive and easy to get use to
also my research has led to sticking w/ the shimano brand as much as you can

when I was talked into the road bike i stayed w/ the 'spd' clipin for
economy and
ease of use reasons. Both my bikes have the spd and all my bikes shoes have
the
spd plates so interchange amongst bikes is easy.

i joined the performance membership option ~$30/yr
and found it to be a quick payback
since I was starting from scratch.

if you have any questions feel free to ask.

I prefer to go to don's bike in wilson as much as i can but his
selection is limited compared to performance when it comes to
shoe sizes etc.

take your time and study up. It really is not that confusing.

good luck
