Folks, the weird politics in your Capital has transported itself to Minneapolis (apparently in unauthorized Air Force planes – see below), where it metastasized and got weirder still. As you know, last week Sen. Wellstone, his wife, child and several others died in a Minnesota plane crash. In the middle of a tight campaign race. But of course, politics must go on. The Democrats couldn’t pull a Carnahan – like they did 2 years ago – and appeal to the voters to elect the grieving widow (for obvious reasons). And apparently there wasn’t time to locate a grieving second-cousin. So they decided to wake Fritz Mondale from the political dead, stand him up, and send him into the fray. Then they had a classic Democrat brainstorm – “Wait! Let’s give Fritz’s campaign a great-big sendoff. We’ll have a huge campaign rally, overflowing with laughing, smiling Democrats – AT WELLSTONE’S MEMORIAL SERVICE!.” It remains to be seen whether this all-time low in taste and decorum will register with the voters. But while the Democrats were slapping each other on the back, Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura – WHO CAME TO FAME AS A PROFESSIONAL WRESTLER– was said to have been appalled by the lack of taste. He may appoint an independent to serve out Wellstone’s term. Have we finally hit the bottom? I think not.
