Ed,
The flashing was greatly reduced, however, there is a pause in the grid
population.  It paints the grid with no data, then populates it.  I changed
the delay to 250 and its better for me.  Also, when I add a new records to
grid and the grid length is greater than the display area, the grid remains
on the top record, where it used to auto refresh and show the new record.
At least, I think it behaved that way.

        I've posted a version that contains numerous changes designed to
speed up grid display. Could both of you test it so that I can get a feel
for how these changes affect a real-world app?
